Breeding Season

With five of our seven mares with foals we are into breeding season. One more foal is to come, Vuzarma bred to the jumper stallion Eldorado is due in early July.

We have bred Zinosa to Johnson and she will be ready for early preg check next week. We like this years foal , a colt, also by Johnson. This gives Jazz on both sides of the pedigree and some Contango influence from the mare sire Tango. The foal is very supple and is showing a very expressive trot and we like his canter.

Veganieta has had a second foal by Contango. This time was a chestnut filly and we are again very pleased with this mating. The yearling Contango/Jazz from Veganieta is developing well and living up to expectations. However, we plan to breed her to Florencio this year. The mare is vaccinated EVA so no problem there. We saw the Charmeur , Florencio/Jazz and we also saw a number of Florencio young horses at DG Bar KWPN/Na annual meeting. We think Florencio should be uses on a mare that is tall and has good body length. The Florencio , Zia, which we bought and is now with Erin MacQuarie has a super hind leg. We would like another foal that steps under like her.

Virginia (Welt hit II/Zeoliet) had the second Sandreo foal this year. This is a refined dressage type foal and follows last years Fiero in both type and movement. Virgina also has two earlier foals by Donnatelli. We have one Donnatelli breeding in our tank and we plan to use it on Virginia.

We plan to breed Florentina to Johnson this year. This is influenced by Demarko a Johnson son now three years old and developing well. He was bought by Andrea Taylor in British Columbia and she sends us regular pictures of him. The other possibility which we considered very seriously for Florentina was Sir Oldenburg with the two previous foal Espertina and Forte.We may go back to Sir Oldenburg next year.

Virtual Rose produced a very nice filly be Sandreo this year but we are planning to breed her to a jumper stallion this year as we are not producing many foals from jumping lines. Vy free jumped very well herself and her sire Idocus had a high jumping index. Her grand sire Quattro had a super jumping career and with Voltair on her sire side she has the genetics to produce a jumper. At this time we are planning to breed her to the Clinton son Eldorado.

Vuzarma is still to foal to Eldorado. We plan to breed her back to this tall, successful sire.

Waltzilina will be bred again to Sandreo. She has produced good foals by Donnatelli, Johnson and Sandreo. After some serious thought we are going to Sandreo again for her. Crispin is doing very well and we like her Sandreo foal this year.

That is the current thinking on choices for stallions for this year.

There are a lot of ups and down in horse breeding but one of the greatest "ups" is seeing a group of horses grazing on pasture. this is the view from our living room and a lot of good time is wasted watching the foals play. We now have five of the six expected foals. Yesterday was the arrival of the third Sandreo filly of the year from our Welt Hit II mare. We only have one mare to go wtih the Hamlet mare due to Eldorado early in July.

Yesterday the third foal of the year and the second Sandreo was born. Waltzlina gave birth to a dark bay filly. A sister to Bolshoy NPF, Crispin NPF, Evieta NPF and Fanfare NPF.

This is our third foal of the year so we are half way there.Next due is our Jazz mare in foal to Contango.

We have had two of our expected six foals here at New Perth farms. This is the "G" year for KWPN registrations.

The first foal was a colt from Zinosa (Tango/ Purioso) by the Jazz son Johnson. This gives us double Jazz in his pedigree as Tango is also a Jazz son. We have decided on a name, Great Gatsby NPF.

The second foal was a dark bay filly from Virtual Rose, (Idocus/Quattro/Cocktail). She is quite elegant and has many of the features we see in our Sandreo offspring which include a very pretty head and neck and light in their movement. With the mare lines we like to carry the name of the mare line foreward. Looking ahead 2011

Its winter and we are looking foreword to spring foaling/breeding and summer training.

This time of year we are thinking about breeding combinations for next year. Like other breeders we all start out with a “wish list” that includes a lot of new stallions. This goes to a “short list” and we are at that stage this time of the year. We look at the criteria for stallions which we will use next year. We tend to be conservative breeders in that we like to go with stallions which have proven themselves and we have seen the offspring. Then we push out a bit with some new blood.

We normally use all frozen semen due to our location and success with frozen. It is difficult to get fresh from the USA on a dependable basis with the possibilities of hiccups in border clearance. Also, our location at the Eastern end of the country does not help fresh semen delivery. We do not consider this a disadvantage as we have had good success with frozen semen over the years. Our over all conception rate with frozen has been 65% since was started in 2004. We use a lot of Team Nijhof stallions because we like their stallions and the logistics of working with one supplier makes it a lot simpler.

At this time we are looking for more breedings to Sandreo because we really like our Sandreo horses. Lots of athletic ability and very trainable making them just the horse for amateur rider but they look like they will have the talent to do higher levels. Our oldest (Bastion) is five this year and we like what we see. There are three mares due to Sandreo for this year. We have another pregnancy to Johnson and we plan to use him again this year. We would like to have a Florencio. We imported one Ziane , now with Erin MacQuarie and showing the super hind leg which is his trademark. The Florenco/Jazz we saw at the stallion show last year makes us think we should breed our Jazz mare to Florencio. We think he needs a long mare of a good height. We will probably breed Vuzarma back to Eldorado depending on what her fold this year. That is where our thinking is at this time.

For training this year we have four horses under saddle. Wiseman (Lord Sinclair/Lancet), now eight, is in Virginia with Martha. She also has the four year old Calypso (Sandreo/Jazz) in training. Bastion (Sandreo/Floristan) , five year old , is in training with Meg in Truro. We expect to have these three to develop and show for next season. We will have two to start this summer. We normally saddle and sit on the two year olds. This year we have Excalibur (Donnatelli/Welt Hit II) and Enieta (Brentano II/Jazz) to start.

With six of our seven brood mares to foal,starting in May,we will have a busy summer.

Winter here in PEI has been easy so far with the temperature seldom much below freezing. We have a nice snow cover compared to the earlier extra long mud season. The horses enjoy this weather much more that rain and a bit of sunshine would be even better.

We are excited about the expected foals. We have three Sandreo breedings and we think we can not have too many Sandreo foals. This is based on our Sandreo offspring we have worked with and enjoyed. This includes Bastion (Sandreo/Floristan), Calypso (Sandreo/Jazz), and Crispin (Sandreo/Jet Set).

We are looking forward to another Contango/Jazz foal and would be pleased with either another colt or a filly which would have potential to stay in the herd as a broodmare.

The Eldorado/Hamlet will be our first by this young stallion. This is an opportunity to bring both Clinton and Heartbreaker genetics to our program. This a young stallion which has already made quite an impression.

The Tango/Johnson will bring double Jazz breeding. This breeding is a bit of a gamble but doubling up on great breeding lines can give great results or not so great! We will see but another Tango would be a great addition.

With six mares in foal for next year we can plan on some sleepless nights and some great foals. Between now and next spring we will have get our breeding plans in place. We now have a "wish list" for 2011 breedings which is highly influenced by previous breedings.

We have not been posting on our blog for some time. We have been slow as I have been doing consulting work in Russia and now just recovered from jet lag and post visit report preparation.

The foals are weaned ! Weaning is always traumatic an sad for all animals and people involved. To minimize trauma we start to separate to foals in mid summer to get a feed of pellets in the alley way separate from the mares. At weaning time we move them to a big pen all together. The company of their buddies goes a long way to settling them down. The mares get over it quickly and they go out to graze. We leave the foals shut in for a couple of weeks and then let them out in a small plank fenced paddock. soon they will go out to a larger fenced paddock where they can come and go from the barn. We feed high quality haylege at weaning. We open a row of the earlier cut bales and give them all they want to eat. This smooths out the transition away from milk. By weaning time the grass is going dormant and the mare's milk quality is down so a switch to haylege is probably an increase in nutrient intake. They kept growing this year with out any slow down. Fortunately we have not had any respiratory infections. The mares are older and their immunity which they pass on should be higher. Also, the ventilation in the weaning pen is good and it is an area they are familiar with so no new bugs.

Bastion and Bolshoy both attended the Dressage PEI Summer show and both did very well. Bolshoy was high point of the show on Saturday, with a 70% in training level 2, and Bastion was high point of the show on Sunday with a 69% in training level 2.

Bolshoy also attended a dressage show in Cape Breton, where he was high score of both days, with a 70% and a 71% in the training level.

Megan took both of the 4 year olds, Bolshoy and Bastion to a clinic with dressage rider/trainer Chris Von Martels. They behaved very well and learned alot during the lessons!

July has been a busy month here at New Perth Farms. All the foals are on the ground and healthy. the last foal was our jumper bred Verdi from the Hamlet mare who we will call Fizzarma.

We have five mares checked pregnant at this time.
Jazz/Zeoliet back to Contango
Welt Hit II back to Sandreo
Idocus/Quattro to Sandreo
Tango/Purioso to Johnson
Jet Set/Harrem to Johnson

The Floristan mare is also bred to Johnson but not long enough to check and the plan is to breed the Hamlet mare to Eldorado.

Bagatelle NPF has been sold. She was in training in Virginia with Martha and has been sold to North Carolina.

Sandreo "C"s

We free lounged our two , three year old Sandreo sons. The taller Sandreo/Jazz, Calipso and Crispin the Sandreo / Jet Set. Both are showing super movement but are quite different. They are now under saddle and are doing "walk trot".

Contango pregnancy

An addition to our "mares in foal " list , Veganieta (Jazz/Zeoliet) in foal to Contango. That is the fourth mare checked pregnant this year. To check next week Floristan mare to Johnson and Welt Hit II to Sandreo the next week. Still to breed is the recently foaled Hamlet mare which we plan to breed to the Clinton son , Eldorado v d Zeshoek.

The Verdi/Hamlet filly is now one week old. This filly has great jumping breeding with Verdi doing very well and Hamlet's famous son Hickstead continuing to be at the top of world jumping.

June Update

Here a New Perth Farms we are finished foaling for the year 2010 ! It is always a big thrill and a relief to have all the foals on the ground. This year was four colts and then a filly. The filly from our jumper bred mare came two weeks early but completely developed. Her hair coat and ears look like a full term foal and she is up on her pasterns. We were concerned because Vuzarma had uddered early but she delivered a healthy filly with out problems. this filly is the twenty fourth foal for us. She has no name yet but is has to start with "F" and will likely have "zarma" at the end to indicate the mare line. Fuzarma, Fazarma, Fezarma ??? None of them exactly have the ring you would want from the announcer.

We have started breeding for 2011 and have bred five mares. Of these three have checked pregnant and one is ready to check next week and one was bred last week end. Both the mares that did not foal this year , Tango/Purioso and Idocus/ Quattro , are now pregnant for next year. We normally breed on thew heat after the foal heat. With frozen semen there is no need to complicate life by trying to get pregnancies on the foal heat. However it is impossible to have an earlier foaling if we do not breed on the foal heat.

The yearlings have shed out and are growing well.

The foals are growing and now the four colts are turned out with their mothers.

The Sir Oldenburg/Floristan colt is developing into a leggy boy.

Show weekend in June

The June 5th weekend was a very exciting one for New Perth Farms. All three of our Four year olds were shown sucessfully at training level. Megan showed Bolshoy (Donnatelli/Jet Set ) and Bastion (Sandreo/ Floristan) at the PEI dressage show with scores from 62 to 69. While Martha showed Bagatelle at Morven park also with scores in the 60's.

The fourth colt of the year arrived, a Sandreo from our Welt Hit II/Zeoliet mare, Virgina. Fiero,a tall leggy colt with a bouncy trot and a wonderful canter.
