A hack in Virginia

Martha on Wiseman (Lord Sinclair/Lancet) and Megan on Bagatelle (Donnatelli/Jazz) were out for a hack this week.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Update late April.

It is nearing the end of April and it has been a very early spring for us here in Prince Edward Island. As a result we have been able to work regularly in our out door arena and the horses are on pasture.

We like to get the horses out early even if there is not much grass growing. This eases the transition from haylege as they stay in side until they have eaten from the feeders and then go out to the pastures during the day. We do not worry about slowing the grass growth as we have lots of pasture even if it's growth gets slowed.

We have been training the three year olds and they are coming along "slowly but surely". The "C"s Crispin, Calypso and Crispin are all different in their personalities and pace of training. At this time they vary from doing walk figure eights with a rider to being led in the arena with a rider sitting on them. They are all super eager to work and it is always a major hassle at the gate as they all want to come out first. Always rewarding working with the young horses as they progress every training day.

Two of the "B"s (Four year olds)Bolshoy and Bastion are on break for a couple of weeks until Meg returns from Virginia where she is helping Martha school Bagatelle and Wiseman.

The "E"s now yearling are all in a growth spurt and are developing nicely. With the good footing they are showing us their moves !

We are watching two mares. Waltzlina (Jet Set/Haarlem) is due to Johnson later this week. She is all uddered and looks like only a few more days to go. Veganieta (Jazz/Zeoliet) is due a week later to Contango. She looks on schedule and we are looking fore ward to our first Contango foal.

No pictures of anyone at this time as they are all partially shed out and do not look their best !

Spring Training

We are currently working with the “C”s which were born in 2007. They are Calypso (Sandreo/Jazz), Charlton (Concorde/Hamlet) and Crispin(Sandreo/ Jet Set).

Our training plan is to halter break the foals and then do some in hand work with the yearlings. They learn to walk and trot with us and be groomed and handled in general.
In the fall of the two year old year we teach them to lounge and tack them up. They may do a few steps with a rider leaning over them. We lounge them lightly but they learn to lounge and to accept the bit and trot and canter with the stirrups down. The stirrups bumping against them desensitize them to contact on their sides. They learn to work with the bit in their mouth . We do a lot of work at the mounting block asking the 2yr old to stand while a rider stands on the block on both sides. The rider does all the things a bad rider would do. This includes whacking the saddle to make a noise and clapping hands over the top of the horse before mounting. This, hopefully, prevents any surprises when real riding starts. All three C’s were started on this routine last fall and then given a winter break.

We have started back with them this spring and the first step is to review last season lessons. Then we move on to sitting on them and then a few steps with a rider and then on to some walking while being led. Then a few trot steps working up to walk and trot of the lead. By mid summer they should be able do walk-trot figure eights. Last summer we were able to take all three of the “B”s to a show. We only showed one but the other three went in the warm up ring and behaved well. We go slowly and always “quit while we are ahead”. By late summer they should be ready to hack out with an older horse as a steadying influence.

This is all accompanied by lots of trailer rides. We do not have an indoor arena so to work in the winter/spring we have to trailer the young ones to an indoor arena. This takes time but getting them off the farm and trailer savvy is a big part of training.

The “B”s are doing what we think four year olds should be doing. They are doing walk, trot, and canter and getting in condition. They have learned to go “on the bit” and are getting various experiences. The ones that are not sold will go to some shows and continue to get various experiences.

Working with young horses is a very rewarding experience as every day they learn something new and progress one more step in the training process.

Bastion NPF

Megan had a lesson on Bastion with Erin MacQuarrie. The weekend cooperated with an unseasonably warm 25C temperature. Bastion(Sandreo/Floristan) is now four years old. We started him under saddle last year and then gave him a break for the winter. He started back with Megan last month and has quickly started to work into the contact. We took him to two shows last year as a noncompete and he behaved like a professional.

Bastion is for sale and would make a great mount for an rider who is looking for a young horse with unlimited potential.

Breeding for 2010

One of the main reasons for going to the stallion show was to finalize our plans for breeding in 2010.

We were planning to rebreed our Jazz/Zeoliet mare to Contango. What we saw and conversations with breeders there confirmed that Contango on Jazz is a logical mating. Many breeders in the Netherlands would like to have access to Contango to improve the canter on their mares.

The plan is to breed our Floristan to Johnson again. Based on the previous foal, Demarko, from this mating and seeing Johnson and other Jazz breeding at the show we will go with this breeding again.

Our Hamlet/Purioso mare, Vuzarma, has had two Concorde foals , one Verdi and expecting another Verdi. We liked all these foals but want to try a new sire on this mare. We liked the way Clinton jumped watching him at the Olympics and the selection committee at the stallion show liked the Clinton sons presented. We now plan to breed Vuzarma to ELDORADO v d ZESHOEK a Clinton son from a Heartbreaker mare.

This is some of the refinements for breeding plans for 2010.

Stallion Show den Bosch

We are back from the stallion show in Den Bosch via a month working with dairy farmers in Kenya. Only zebras and a few polo ponies to feed a horse addiction in Kenya !

The stallion show met all expectations with wonderful horses and many, many, people dedicated to breeding sport horses. The quality of the young horses was spectacular and many older stallions including some of the foundations stallions gave a lot of insight into the breed.

There were some wonderful young individuals shown and were the talk of the day they were presented. However, the basic livestock breeding principle that “the breed direction is determined by the sires which are selected to sire the next generation of sires”. Looking back the decision to use sires such as Jazz, Flemingh, Nimmerdor, and Voltaire has shaped the breed. Think of the impact of 500 Gribaldi offspring each year on what the breed looks like.

We saw the early results of dividing the selections into jumper lines and dressage lines. We saw two distinct groups of horses as a result of the selection decision to specialize. The neck set of the two groups is one of the indicators that there are two directions evolving.

In the mare lines of the stallions approved for the next round we saw a lot of Jazz and Krack C influence. Interestingly, the Wolfgang son , Oscar appeared in the pedigree of three of the six dressage finalists. With the emphasis on mare lines were thrilled to see the Oscar son , yet to have a name , which was named the dressage champion is from the same mare line as our Veganieta. As a breeder it is exciting to see offspring of the sires we have used presented as sire prospects. We saw sons of Johnson, Verdi, Tango, Concorde, Jazz, Orame and Sandreo, all sires we have used in our breeding programme. We also saw Johnson, Tango and Verdi under saddle. We had seen them two years ago and their development was impressive.

The dressage night was a real show, complete with fireworks Las Vegas style! The younger stallions were presented first and then it progressed to the light tour stallions and the FEI stallions. The presentation of Totilus was everything it could be. Every ride we have seen previously there is something which could be improved but there was nothing in this ride which could be improved. Totally relaxed, expressive and in front of an enthusiastic crowd !

Stallion show

We are attending the stallion show in den Bosch this week. Very excited to see the young stallions and Jazz tribute as well as Gribaldi sons.

There is no "live stream" this year except for the auction.

I will post my impressions but probable not until the end of the month as I will be going to Kenya to work with dairy farmers for three weeks immidately after the stallion show.

Remembering summer

When we have the dull days of winter it is always nice to look back at the pictures and videos of summer. Photos of mares on the pasture with foals always gives us hope that the green grass will come again.

KWPN Stallion Show

Martha and I will be attending the second round of KWPN stallion selection at den Bosch Feb3rd to 6th. In the first round there is normally 650 three year old stallions presented at various locations. From this about 125 potential jumping and dressage sires are selected. At this second round the three year old stallions are free lounged and free jumped and jogged in hand. There is about twenty five selected from this group that go to the final test where they are trained and evaluated under saddle next spring.

This is an excellent opportunity to see offspring of all the important sires presented in groups according to their sire. We will see offspring of sires we have been using and will be able to see new prospects for use with our mares.

Also there will be an opportunity to see some of the stallions approved in previous years. Also the top KWPN jumper and dressage stallions will be performing. This includes this year Jazz sons Johnson, Tango, Parzaval. Gribaldi sons will be featured this year with Panted Black and the amazing Totilas.

Four days of “all horses all the time”.

Winter in PEI

We have so far enjoyed one of the easiest winters in a long time here is Prince Edward Island. We have had the perfect amouny of snow, just a light dusting to cover the ground, and the temperatures have been hovering just below freezing. Cold enough to keep the ground frozen and avoid the dreaded red mud we are known for and not cold enough to cause problems with frozen waterers. Our water bowls are all insulated or plug in buckets but when it is very cold , below -20C, we need to heat these bowls if there is only a small number of horses drinking from them.

These pictures were taken in last days of '09 and show how the horses enjoy the cold and snow!

Breedings for 2010

Breedings for 2010.

We are already thinking about and debating breedings for this year. We should have seven mares available, five in foal and two currently open. Final breeding decisions are not made this time of year and actually Martha and I are planning to go to the KWPN Stallion show in February so everything is subject to change based on what we see there.

Some of the basics of our breeding program are: We use almost exclusively frozen semen. Fresh shipment are difficult where we farm as cross border shipment from the USA are unpredictable. We like the choice that is available in frozen. We have a good “repro vet”. The conception rate is good as we select sires based on frozen fertility.

We use a lot of Team Nijhof stallions. Like most breeders who do not own a stallion we have a working relationship with a major stud. This allows more efficient shipping as well as the guidance from experienced breeders. We do not feel that our breeding program is limited in any way by using mostly stallions from this stud.

Our market is primarily talented amateurs. Like all breeders our dream is the FEI horse for the professional but the facts are ridability should be number one to fit well with the market.

These are our current thoughts.

Veganieta (Jazz/Zeiolet) 172cm We have three offspring from her. A Donnatelli, coming four, under saddle. She is a bit bigger than we expected and continues to impress us with her great mind. A Sandreo which is three this year very tall, supple and very easy to work with. Also a weanling by Brentano II. Looks like she will be tall and goes through some weird growth phases but a super mover and we have high expectations of her. Veganieta is currently to Contango. We saw Ravel at the KWPN Annual meeting last year and we wanted one of those ! Also, with the great mix of Jazz and Contango genes in offspring such as Tango made it a mating to try. The plan for next year - Contango again.

Florentina (Floristan/Pilot) We have two from this mare by Sandreo, one by Johnson and one by Sir Oldenburg and she is carrying a Sir Oldenburg foal. We have sold all except a four year old by Sandreo and we like them all. Her offspring tend to be bigger than her and just what you would expect from Floristan. We will probably go back to Johnson with her next breeding just to give us a second look at what this cross produces.

Vuzarma (Hamlet/Purioso) She has had two Concorde foals and one Verdi and is carrying a Verdi pregnancy. We sold the youngest Concorde and the Verdi. This mare is jumping blood and we liked both these crosses but we are currently thinking we try a different stallion next year so no decision until after the stallion show.

Virgina (Welt Hit II/Zeoliet) has had two Donnatelli foals. A filly coming three, sold in Nova Scotia and a weanling colt. Both look like they will be leggier and taller than their dam but are still young. Welt Hit II is now #7 on the list of GP sires so this is exciting. Virgina shows her Weltmyer and Ramaro blood with lots of bone so we must be careful not to use an “Old Style” stallion. She is carrying a Sandreo foal for this spring. We will not decide until we see the foal but the list now looks like another Donnatelli or another Sandreo.

Virtual Rose. (Idocus/Quattro) A smaller mare who is currently not in foal. We have a very nice Sir Oldenburg weanling colt from her. This mare shows a lot of athletic ability and has breeding which should give both dressage and jumping potential with Idocus and Quattro. The Sir Oldenburg should follow this thinking with a dressage stallion who has a good jumping index and lots of jump in his pedigree and he should add some size. At this time breeding back to Sir Oldenburg is on the top of the list.

Zanientha (Tango/Purioso) . This mare is also open this year. She has had two foals by Lord Sinclair. Both have sold and were super foals. She brought the refinement and “go” which we think goes well with Lord Sinclair. She needs a stallion which will bring some size as she is not big. Right now we have not decided for 2010 but we are thinking of trying a new cross. We would like to have a Florencio but are a bit concerned that he can make some smaller offspring. Again we can firm up a plan after the stallion show.

Waltzlina (Jet Set D/Haarlem) This is a big mare with lots of bone. We have a Donnatelli , coming four, under saddle and a Sandreo the next year followed by a Johnson from this mare. The Donnatelli is great to work with, very supple and willing. The Sandreo has a deeper body and probably not be as tall (16.2?). The Johnson weanling at this time looks like a clone of the dam. Three very different looking progeny. At this time we are planning to go back to Sandreo.

There are photos of all these mares on our website under "Broodmares"

So that is the current plan which is a work in progress.

Weanlings.

Enieta (Brentano II/Jazz) leads the way out to the field on a snow covered day.

The '09 foals have recovered from weaning and are now in a growth spirt. They like to get out in the snow and show their stuff!!

SNOW !!

It was the first real snow on December 6th which is on the late side for us. The weanlings had never seen this much snow so this was an excuse for a good run. We added a picture of the house because the snow might not stay for a white Christmas.

News for Fall '09

"The ’09 foals have been weaned. Weaning is a gradual process as we separate the foals from their dams for feeding each night for a short while. This starts in August and we then build up the time away just before weaning. It usually goes well because there is a group, this year seven foals, to provide company for the each other. We then separate them and the mares soon are of to the pasture with out them. We leave the foals penned in the barn for a few days and then to a small outdoor pen. They now have their own pasture and are quite independent. However, they look like weanlings , a bit ribby and not as slick as when they are getting lots of milk. The four foals which have been sold will be staying with us for some time to take advantage of group up bringing.

We took Bagatelle ( Donnatelli/Jazz) to Martha in Virginia for training. Bagatelle is now three and was doing walk- trot -canter both ways. Martha will school her for the winter and she will be offered for sale.

We have sold Demarko (Johnson/Floristan) to Andrea Taylor in British Columbia. Andrea is a very successful rider and coach and we are delighted to have Demarko going to her stable"

Enieta NPF (Brentano II/Jazz)

Enkeur NPF (Lord sinclair/Tango) and Zinosa (Tango/Purioso) First Premium

Esprentina NPF (Sir Oldenburg/ Floristan) First Premium Ch Young horse

Bagatelle NPF (Donatelli / Jazz) 3 yrs

Demarko NPF (Johnson/Floristan) yearling First Premium

The 2009 gingerwood keuring is now history. It was a beautiful sunny day and the facilities were spectacular. The keuring jury was scheduled to start at 2 pm but the jury's plane was diverted to Halifax and after promised rescheduling they had to drive the last leg of their trip. They arrived for a 7 pm start ! The last of the two dressage rides were in failing sunlight and we moved indoors for the rest of the keuring. However, with the great indoor lighting at Gingerwood the keuring went very well.

We recieved a first premium for the yearling Demarko (Johnson/Floristan) , two year old Calypso (Sandreo/Jazz) and the foals Espertina ( Sir Oldenburg/Floristan) and Enkur (Lord Sinclair)

Zinosa was accepted into the studbook and Bagatelle NPF recieved a high enough mark for studbook but needs to meet further requirments as she is register B.

Esprentina NPF was the high scoring foal at the keuring.

All our pictures were taken before the keuring while there was still light so we had no ribbons at that time.
